Linking Students with Great Books

Book Links, a bimonthly publication of the American Library Association, is a great resource for teachers, home school parents and others working with pre-school through high school students. Articles are short and user-friendly with subjects oriented to classroom subjects. Editors select topics that appeal to children. Many of these will also apply to church and scout projects.

 Editors explore all aspects of the curriculum from history to science, authors and holidays. Each article has an annotated list of books with the goal to help teachers bring great books into the classroom. Each issue features a comprehensive bibliography of all the books featured in that month’s issue, plus a help page to connect the content with school standards.

The paper edition of Book Links is available at Central Library Children’s Department, and Martin and Hardesty Regional Library Adult Periodicals departments. It is also available through the library’s online catalog. The November 2007 offers these articles:
New books for the classroom;
Helping students hone their skills in reading novels;
Two different articles about postwar compassion and hope;
Interview with three authors;
Art composition in picture books;
Portraying disability in children’s books;
Issues of social class in children’s books;
“Signed, Sealed, Delivered: Books About the Postal System;
Books written in letter format (epistolary novels).
Spy novels.
All in one issue!
The January issue will feature best books of 2007, new mysteries and the civil rights movement.

To explore an issue, go to the library catalog and type Book Links for the title.
