Catch the Reading Bug
Summer Reading 2008
May 19 - August 3

This month’s edition of The Library League Newsletter begins by focusing on the 2008 Summer Reading Program – Catch the Reading Bug!

Why summer reading?
The summer reading program is designed to prevent children from losing reading skills they gained during the school year. Studies indicate that children who don’t read over the summer can lose up to 2 months of hard earned reading achievement, while reading just five books over the summer can lead to as much as a 3 percentile gain on testing.  Imagine the losses and gains created by many summers of either not reading or reading even just a few books! Summer is a great time for children to discover that libraries offer a vast amount of materials about subjects they enjoy - that may be just the hook to make them life-long readers - plus programs for them to enjoy.

How the program works… English/Spanish

Not looking forward to that long car trip or flight?  A book on CD can entertain you and your whole family, and you can count it on your Summer Reading Program!

We’re always looking for kids to review books at our Tulsa Kids Recommend page.

Starting May 16, our Library League homepage will have a link for kids to explore the Summer Reading Program.  As always our superheroes will also link kids to books, events, and fun so help them discover our resources both on the web and in our buildings.
